Liberty’s Kitchen is a nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming the lives of New Orleans youth by providing a path to self-sufficiency through food service-based training, leadership, and work-readiness programs. The nonprofit’s training program targets at-risk youth age 16-24 who are out of school and work, and combines hands-on food service training with classroom instruction, individual case management, job placement services, and follow-up support. Ninety percent of program participants are employed by graduation, and 80 percent are still employed six months later. In addition to preparing food for Liberty Kitchen’s on-site café and catering services, participants make over 4,000 nourishing meals on a daily basis for New Orleans low-income to extremely low-income public schoolchildren. In October 2014, the nonprofit moved into a new 10,000 square foot facility at the Refresh Project, which will enable it to source more local food, increase the number of meals it can provide to the community, and serve up to 200 youth a year.
