Based in Milwaukee, the United Community Center (UCC) provides education, cultural arts, recreation, community development, and health and human services to 15,000 near south side residents, largely Hispanic, on an annual basis. Aiming to increase neighborhood stability, in 1994 UCC initiated its Walker Square Neighborhood Development Initiative, which provides support and resources to help families purchase and stay in homes. Over the past decade, the program has helped residents close on 465 homes, totaling $50.2 million in property values, and the neighborhood increase the percentage of homeowners from 40% to nearly 80%. Within UCC’s building, it also runs Café el Sol, a restaurant specializing in Mexican and Puerto Rican cuisine, which contributes 2 percent of its roughly $17 million budget.
